Rules:
In order to be eligible for participation in the EWH Design Competition, each Innovation Team must follow these guidelines:
- Each team must be from an active EWH chapter with paid dues for the 2009-2010 academic year. These dues may be paid at any time during the 2009-2010 academic year.
- Each EWH chapter is limited to one Innovation Team in the EWH Design Competition, and each Innovation Team is limited to one design submission.
- Each Innovation Team must have at least one engineering student who is a member of the EWH chapter and an adviser who is a practicing engineer or faculty from an engineering department.
We encourage Innovation Teams to include members with diverse academic backgrounds, undergraduate students, graduate students, and to consult professionals in engineering and other fields.
To participate in the 2009-2010 EWH Design Competition, each Innovation Team must complete entry materials by the deadline on December 1, 2009, including:
- Registration form including a roster of team members.
Team size is not limited, and teams are encouraged to consult as many outside sources as needed.
- Entry fees.
The fee is $100 for EWH chapters with university affiliation status, and $300 for other EWH chapters. There will be a discount on the entry fee of $50 for those chapters that enter before the early registration deadline of November 1, 2009.
- Design proposal.
Each team must submit a proposal for a design project that can have an impact on improving health care in developing countries. The proposal should include a clear problem definition for the design project and an explanation of the positive impact the proposed solution can have in developing countries. No prototypes or test data are required at this point. The proposal should be a maximum of two pages.
In response to the proposal, EWH will take one of the following actions:
1) Accept the proposal. EWH will accept all proposals that are deemed by EWH to have a feasible positive impact on health care in any developing country. Design proposals may come from the current EWH Projects that Matter list of design challenges, published annually in August.
2) Decline the proposal with a written explanation of the reason it was not accepted.
If a proposal is not accepted, the deadline for a subsequent design proposal will be extended to two weeks from the day the written explanation was delivered by EWH, if that date is later than the previously established deadline for submission. The registration fee charged will be in accordance with the date of the preliminary design proposal submitted by the Innovation Team. (Thus, in the event that a proposal was submitted before the early registration deadline, November 1, and EWH declined the proposal and extended the deadline for a subsequent proposal into the first week or two of November, the Innovation Team may still pay the reduced early registration fee for a subsequent design proposal acceptance that meets the new deadline.) If no design proposal is accepted for the competition, EWH will return any paid registration fees in full.
To be eligible for awards in the EWH Design Competition, each Innovation Team must submit a finished design by the deadline of June 15. The submitted design must be for a proposed design that was approved by EWH.
